Day 3 of the Tahoe Triple is the official Lake Tahoe Marathon. It runs on bike trails and highway 89 along the west shore of Lake Tahoe south from Tahoe City to South Lake Tahoe through mostly mature forest and a few small towns. While the northbound lane of the highway was closed to most traffic the southbound lane was packed with cars and busses for most of the race. Very scenic course with a couple of big hills between miles 14 and 20 but no net elevation change. One to two inches of snow fell the night before the race so the course was icy and snowy in shady places. I was surprised how fast I ran, taking 10 minutes of my time from day 2.

Susan and I really enjoyed staying here. It was somehow very cozy and comforting. Bill and Cindy Gabrielli were gracious and knowledgeable hosts, referring us to excellent restaurants and a wonderful masseuse. Highly recommended.

Race morning was sunny and calm but cold, only about 28F at the start - the same beach where we were soaking in the lake yesterday afternoon.

Susan and I arrived in Tahoe City just in time to hear the starting shotgun blast. I crossed the timing line about 3 minutes later, then paused for Susan to take my picture as I was leaving the parking lot.

Lots more runners today than yesterday so it wasn't hard to see the pack up ahead. Black ice in places on the road made footing a little tricky though.

Most of the Triple runners were wearing their blue singlets. Up ahead on the right in the gray short-sleeved shirt and yellow/purple shorts is Barefoot Todd #210, running barefoot of course despite the ice and snow.

Todd having a great time at about mile 1. I ran for a while on day 1 with the man behind him in the red gloves - he was adhering to a regular run-walk schedule, 3 minutes running (I think) and 1 minute walking.

I passed these two guys early in the race on each day of the Triple. At the buffet dinner, they were identified as having run 7 prior Tahoe Triple Marathons - they clearly know what they are doing. Not fast, but consistent.

Snow and in places ice persisted on the bike trail longer than on the road. Often the trail was next to the road; sometimes it veered off into the woods. Either way it was pleasant running except for the footing.

There was also a skateboard race running on the closed lane of the highway, and bicyclers headed the opposite direction. I don't know about the bicycles, but the skateboarders were having some trouble with the icy sections - some of them gave up and walked after their skateboards skidded out from underneath them on the ice. At least one of these guys looks pretty comfortable though.

Here we are part way up the big hill on the course, though it wasn't as big as the climb up to Spooner lake in the last 4 miles of day 1. After trading places with Heath Bryant, on the right, several times, I challenged him to race me to the top of the hill. He won but we ran together until mile 20, talking about running and Jesus and about similarities between the SDA and LDS churches, I representing the former and he the latter. Heath was running his first marathon, after spending the past year in missionary service in the Lake Tahoe area.

Peanut crispy bars and strawberries, respectively, are served at the mile 20 aid station at the Emerald Bay overlook. This is where Marathon 1 of the Triple started two days ago, so I have now completed the 72 mile circuit of the entire lake. I tried a bar but it was too hard to bite into - should have taken a strawberry instead.

I finished the Tahoe Triple - three marathons in three days, and each one faster than the previous one. My average time was about 4:35 which was just about my average finishing time for the dozen or so marathons I ran last year. Not bad, especially considering the average 6400' elevation of the courses.

Pyramid Lake, an alkaline lake which is the ultimate destination of the Lake Tahoe drainage. The Truckee River exits Lake Tahoe at Tahoe City and runs through Reno before flowing into Pyramid Lake, from which there is no exit. Big Lahontan Cutthroat trout were native to both Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake with fish as large as 50lbs. Although both populations went extinct decades ago they have been reintroduced and now support a fishery in Pyramid Lake. Competition from introduced trout species is hampering their recovery in Lake Tahoe.

Day 3 of the Tahoe Triple is the official Lake Tahoe Marathon. It runs on bike trails and highway 89 along the west shore of Lake Tahoe south from Tahoe City to South Lake Tahoe through mostly mature forest and a few small towns.
