Agate from Lucas Creek east of Centralia (area now closed)

IMPORTANT NOTE: As of Fall 2009, Weyerhaeuser has closed Lucas Creek to all agate collecting due to excessive digging in and along the stream.

Lucas Creek drains the hills north of Hwy 12 east of Centralia, WA. Agates from the area are impressive but scarce. They weather out of gravel and clay layers cut by the streams but are too rare to find by digging. Like most carnelian agate, the red color is usually only near the surface or along cracks. For photos of agate collected after the 2009 mudflow, see the Lucas Creek 2009 gallery.
