Christmas poem to his children by John Pepper, December 25, 1991 (lightly edited)
In days of yore at Christmas time,
before dawn kids awoke,
(for late sleeping they were disinclined
'till into teens they broke)
so early up for stocking gifts
and checking 'neath the tree,
for at that age a mind won't drift
from package op'ning spree.
But now maturity has come.
No longer do our three
awake at crack of dawn and run
to stockings for that spree
that always starts our Christmas day
both then and even now.
Today we have to wake and say
"A Merry Christmas". How
are we to fit a full day's plans
into the next few hours
if out of bed you do not prance
and finish with your showers?
But now along with age has come
a change in interests of
the type of gifts that some
or all non-Yuppies love.
Considering the burdens faced
by those in twenties and
even in their thirties placed,
for custom does demand
expenditures at every turn.
Now Alice dear and I
have met the day for which we yearn;
on you we must rely
to make our holiday just right.
And we can really say
there's never been a time more bright
than this year's Christmas day.
We hope that in this envelope
the gift that you will find
will help with all expenses cope
so all can now unwind
from Christmas travel, gifts and all.
So never will we fear
that Tuesday next we will install
for all a bright New Year.
