Day 2 of the Tahoe Triple marathon runs down from the Spooner Lake area to Incline Village, through the towns and strips of Brockway, Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista, Carnelian, Cedar Flat and Lake Forest to Tahoe City. Nice lake views, rolling hills and moderate traffic for most of the course. I only recall a couple aid stations but Susan met me a few times and Michael Connors' family helped me out too. I arrived at the start 5 minutes late so ran fast to catch up, finished around 4:30 by my watch.
I crossed the starting line five minutes after the gun which cost me three places in my age group but inspired me to run faster than I otherwise would have.

Mark Russell from Virginia, with whom I ran off and on for much of the race, walking up the only significant uphill in the first half of the course.

Looking ahead along the NE shore of Lake Tahoe towards Sand Point and the mountains above Incline Village. We drove in from Reno over those mountains on Hwy 431 and found fresh snow along the road up at the pass.

Nice beach at Sand Point, but no time to explore. Next year I'd like to stay a couple extra days.

The view back along the shore from around mile 8. To this point we've descended about 800' overall from the start near Spooner Lake.

Mark Russell again, approaching Incline Village around mile 10. The first 10 miles of day 2 traverse a state park and other undeveloped forest land. The scenery, the generally downhill grade and somewhat lighter traffic made for very pleasant running.

Talking with Mark and Kimberlie Budzik from Texas, I neglected to take any pictures as we ran through Incline Village past multi-million dollar homes on Lakeshore Blvd. The crane in this picture is engaged in construction of another very expensive house.

View east across Crystal Bay towards Incline Village. The bay isn't very protected - wind storms occasionally wash boats up onto the rocks.

Mark and Kimberlie running up the hill towards the California state line. Traffic in this section was as bad as anywhere on the course.

The Tahoe Biltmore and Crystal Bay Club marked the California Nevada border back when my wife came up to Lake Tahoe during high school. Too young to enter the casino, she was relegated to the teenager section from which she could watch her parents drinking and gambling. She did meet a boy there whom she dated occasionally for a year or so but nothing ever came of it.

I ran with Michael Connors, a junior-high language arts teacher from Sparks NV, for a mile or two through South Lake Tahoe on day 1. Unable to run on day 2, he and his family served as roving volunteers, cheering me on whenever they passed me. I was grateful for their support and encouragement but sorry that Michael couldn't run.

The smells wafting from the Char-Pit in Kings Beach as I ran by were almost enough to get me to stop in for an early lunch.

The beach in Tahoe Vista around mile 18 is a typical Lake Tahoe beach - clear turquoise water, orange-tinted sand and tall pine trees. And in late September, a cool breeze.

How does the saying go? "The worst day on a marathon course is better than the best day at work" or something like that. Despite losing the hat in a gust of wind two miles later in Carnelian.

Despite hustling to keep up with Susan whom I caught around mile 24 for the second day in a row, I had to stop and photograph these aspen in the sun.

Susan Gallup from Calgary Alberta. We sat with her and her husband at the buffet dinner on Wednesday night and I ran the last couple miles of both days 1 and 2 with her. She held a very consistent pace through both days 1 and 2 and achieved her goal of running faster each day of the Triple.

Commons Beach isn't as nice as some of the Lake Tahoe beaches but it was an easy walk from the day 2 finish so attracted lots of marathoners seeking cold therapy for their legs. With the waves and a steady breeze, it was plenty cold. The toughest part was walking across the little underwater rocks on the way back to shore on nearly numb feet.

I stayed in for over 20 minutes then shivered through two large hot chocolates from Starbucks on the way back to our B&B in Incline Village. Wonderful place by the way - Gabrielli's Bed and Breakfast. Quiet, cozy and comfortable. The Gabrielli's were gracious hosts. Very knowledgeable about the area, they referred us to excellent restaurants and a wonderful masseuse.
