I made it out to Westport for two fishing trips w/ Larry this summer, first during the very hot weather at the end of July (it was 62F at Westport, 104F at home), and again at the end of August. Both trips were cut short by engine trouble so again this year I wrapped up my salmon fishing at Costco.

The only photos I took of our one day fishing in August was of the big squids we hooked instead of salmon. The squid were strong and aggressive; it took Larry 30 minutes to get the first one to the boat. Another time the squid broke free from the lure then immediately went after it again. Larry was able to unhook them in the water so we didn't have to bring them aboard the boat.

Our second day in our August trip the conditions were rough - 5-8' swells and 1-3+' seas. Our intention was to motor out a few miles beyond buoy 3 then troll downwind but just as we were about there we hit a big wave and went airborne. When we came down the engine woudn't run properly, kept idling and surging, so we turned around and headed in without fishing.

The rough conditions weren't much better for birding than for fishing, though we did OK considering our limited time on the water. The highlights of the day were a Buller's Shearwater and a Parasitic Jaeger but this is probably just another Western Gull.
