Photos, mostly of birds, from our visit to my folks in Jackson NH during the first week of June 2009. Most of these were shot with the Nikon 70-300mm zoom which isn't ideal for birds but is still better than anything else I've used, or can afford at this point in time. The weather was beautiful every day and the birding pretty good too - 16 different warblers for starters. A peregrine circled over the house one morning and I managed to see both a scarlet tanager and a rose-breasted grosbeak, though the latter was a female.

Black-throated Blue warbler in Pinkham Notch. Common, and often forages down near the ground but despite multiple opportunities, I never did get a really sharp photo. The 70-300 sometimes struggles to auto-focus in the undergrowth, usually at the most inopportune times.

One of my favorite warblers, a Blackburnian. I can no longer hear the very high ending to its song unless I'm quite close to the singer. These too tend to stay in the treetops. I found I got better pictures on the steep slopes of South Doublehead where I could look across at their preferred habitat rather than straight up.

Scarlet Tanager. I hadn't seen one of these in several years. They like mature hardwood forests, though this one was singing and foraging in a tall hemlock. Maybe someday I'll get a close-up shot, but I was delighted just to be able to see this one.

Chipping sparrow, common in open areas, like around lawns.

Song Sparrow. That's a look of concern on its face.

Dark-eyed junco singing, and on one leg too. This one owns the west-facing ledges on South Doublehead.

White-throated sparrow in a birch tree on Pinkham Notch. Their scolding seemed to attract, or at least activate, other species nearby. A pair of Blue Jays showed up to see what was going on and a Yellow-rumped, a Blackpoll and a Black-throated Green all began singing in the same vicinity.

Bobolink on hellebore in the lower field. When I was just out of high school and interested in wild plant foods, I boiled up some hellebore shoots and tried to eat them but they were just too bitter. Good thing, as they're quite poisonous. They apparently make good bobolink habitat though.

These two male Purple Finches were also hanging around the feeder during our visit back in April. I had the impression this time that these were unemployed batchelors living on welfare, but maybe I misjudged them.

Purple Finch, airborne but not exactly flying.
