Black-tailed Gull with California Gull. Note darker mantle, pale eye, different bill pattern, pale forehead w/ dusky nape and longer primary projection on the Black-tailed Gull.

Thayer's Gull. Missing primaries account for excessive amount of white in wingtips. Mantle is somewhat paler than typical Thayer's.
