On the last weekend of March Daniel and David and some of their friends joined us for a stay at a rustic cabin along Hwy 410 near the Crystal Mountain road. On Saturday it snowed 9" and we built a 9' igloo using the
Icebox tool I bought a year ago. It took five of us about 4 hours but the end result was nearly perfect. Sage and Selina even slept in it overnight. Daniel shuttled Hannah, Becca and Tracy up from Enumclaw when their car couldn't handle the snow, then shuttled them back on Sunday morning after we all visited the igloo and had a snowball fight. It was a wonderful time.

The cabin, our home for the weekend, was built in 1938. We bought the use of it for the weekend a year ago at the annual Charles Wright Academy auction.

Working on the third row. Jeff, David and I shoveled snow into the form while Sage and Selina packed it down to make the block. I read the instructions before we started and found the process to be straightforward, though time-consuming.

After the fourth row I dug out the entrance so we could get in and out of the igloo. Here's a view from below of the Icebox form in place. The length of the pole is adjusted for each row to accomodate the curve of the walls. One end of the pole is attached to the block form, the other to a stake in the center of the igloo floor. The stake anchors the form so the new block will be in the right position; things went awry several times when the stake broke loose.

David took this picture from the doorway, looking up at me and Sage inside the igloo just after we completed it. The top of the door is even with the floor of the igloo in order to trap warm air inside. A trench cut in the center of the igloo makes it easier to get in and out the doorway, and also enables me to stand in the igloo with a couple inches clearance over my head.

Our snow-covered cars in the driveway, which Daniel and I enlarged somewhat on Saturday morning in anticipation of several of his friends driving up Saturday afternoon. This sign was literally true for a couple of hours Saturday afternoon when hwy 410 was closed due to accidents. When Hannah asked a highway patrolman in Enumclaw how soon the road would be opened, he replied that he wished he could keep it closed all winter. He told her "There are fatalities on that road every winter and there's nothing up there worth dying for".

The cabin is just a short walk from the entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. Highway 410 through the park is closed during the winter but WSDOT has already plowed it as far as Cayuse Pass in anticipation of re-opening the highway for the summer. It could be yet another month or more before they're able to clear it over Chinook Pass to the east side.
