Outside of the same piece. This was the outer surface of a stump which was standing upright and enclosed in basalt. The weathering and sculpting is very similar to that seen on trees in high mountain "silver" forests, where the stumps have been charred then exposed to the elements for a few decades. The charcoal wears away leaving an etched and weather-smoothed surface.
